Accessible Gold Coast Connecting Communities

Media Release

Volunteering Gold Coast has recently expanded their Accessible Beaches project to Tallebudgera Creek in partnership with Neptune Royal Life Saving Club.

The Accessible Beaches Project first launched at Surfers Paradise SLSC in early October and involves utilising volunteer support to roll out AccessMats, supplied by City of Gold Coast, that assist people with challenged mobility, in wheelchairs and families using prams to gain easy access to the water’s edge.

This is Volunteering Gold Coast’s first project since rebranding from Volunteering Services Australia.

“Last year was a pivotal year for Volunteering Gold Coast in becoming more community focused and increasing the number of people we support. Our new mission for Volunteering Gold Coast is to optimise social impact through harnessing innovation, promoting inclusion and connecting communities,” said Mr Simon Nugus, CEO of Volunteering Gold Coast.

“Collaborating with Surf Clubs across the Gold Coast to make Australia’s most iconic beaches accessible for everyone is a great first step to achieving this mission.”  Said Mr Nugus.

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate has recognised Volunteering Gold Coast’s efforts in helping the city be more inclusive and connected.

“Gold Coast enjoys a well-deserved reputation as Australia’s favourite playground but we must always ensure we provide a good time to everyone. That’s why I have a personal commitment that no-one gets left behind on the Gold Coast. The AccessMats initiative is very important for ensuring equal opportunity and I commend Volunteering Gold Coast for their active involvement in delivering accessible and inclusive opportunities for the community,” said Mayor Tom Tate

The AccessMats and Beach Wheelchairs will be available at Tallebudgera Creek every Saturday from 8:30am – 3:30pm and will be operated by a team of dedicated VGC Volunteers.
