National Volunteer Week: Giving Thanks to COVID-19 Volunteers
This year for National Volunteer Week (18-24 May 2020), Volunteering Gold Coast (VGC) is giving thanks to all the volunteers who are donating their time to help the Gold Coast community during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Many local not-for-profit organisations have been diversifying their services to support those experiencing hardship during these times. Simon Nugus, CEO of Volunteering Gold Coast, praises volunteers for their invaluable contributions during these difficult times which allow organisations to continue helping the Gold Coast community.
“We recently introduced new services to support those in the Gold Coast community who are experiencing health and economic difficulty from covid-19. We would not be able to operate these new services if it wasn’t for the selfless volunteers who are still willing to give back to the community and help others,” he said.
For the last two months, volunteers have been helping VGC and the Gold Coast community by driving clients to appointments, delivering groceries, books and puzzles to clients as well as providing virtual companionship and welfare checks to individuals who may be experiencing loneliness while isolating.
VGC has partnered with Queensland Health, Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service and City of Gold Coast to provide isolated transportation for people who require testing for COVID-19. This service allows people to be driven by volunteer drivers to Virus testing stations and fever clinics across the Gold Coast, and returns them safely to their homes.
VGC has also teamed up with local charity Walk with Us with volunteer drivers helping to deliver food hampers to their clients and keep up with demands.
“[During Covid-19] There is still a need out there for people to go to appointments and various places and I was very pleased to assist,” said Bill, who has been a volunteer driver with VGC for over 8 years.
“What a wonderful service, I am so grateful for you all. I will always consider Volunteering Gold Coast as one of my most supportive friends,” said VGC client, Patti.
