Combatting Loneliness in Our Elderly Community: How You Can Help Through Volunteering

Did you know that loneliness is a serious issue affecting millions of people worldwide? In Australia alone, one in six people are experiencing severe loneliness, which can lead to a range of negative health outcomes, including depression, anxiety, and physical illness. It’s a particularly pressing issue for our elderly community members, with nearly half of aged care residents receiving no visits from family or friends.

The causes of loneliness are complex and varied, but geographical location and family circumstances can often play a role in isolating people socially and physically. That’s why initiatives like the Aged Care Volutneer Visitors Scheme are so important (ACVVS). The program connects Home Care Package recipients and Residential Aged Care recipients with a new friend for weekly visits in an effort to combat loneliness.

The idea is simple: by providing companionship and social interaction, volunteers can make a real difference in the lives of those who are experiencing loneliness and isolation. It only takes one hour each week to make a positive impact on someone’s life. Volunteers can chat with ACVVS participants, share stories, and provide meaningful companionship – a small gesture that can make a big difference.

If you’re interested in volunteering for the ACVVS, we would be so grateful for your help. Together, we can make a real difference and help combat loneliness and isolation among those in home care and aged care. Whether you’re looking to give back to your community, meet new people, or simply make a difference in someone’s life, volunteering is a wonderful opportunity to do just that.
